NORTHROP
EXPERIMENTAL
These two CDs cover four experimental types produced
by the Northrop Corporation which never made production.

YF-17 - Developed from fighter technology progressively
produced by Northrop since the 1960's the YF-17 was one
of two prototypes in the USAF Lightweight Fighter contest.
First flown in 1974, the aircraft eventually lost out to the
General Dynamics YF-16 in the contest. The US Navy was
expected to adopt the contest winner as well, but instead
chose to develop the YF-17 basic design.
This was subsequently developed by McDonnell-Douglas as
the F-18 and was very successfull.

YF-23 - This very elegant aircraft was one of two final
competitors in the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) contest
to find a successor to the F-15. The YF-23 first flew in 1989,
but after a hard-fought two year contest, in 1991 the Lockheed
YF-22 was announced as the winner.
Both examples of the YF-23 are preserved in US Museums.

A-9A - The Northrop A-9A was developed in response to
a USAF request for a dedicated Close Air Support/ground
attack aircraft capable of operating from short unimproved
runways, have a long loiter time over the battlefield area
and have a relatively high cruise speed to get from the
home field to the battle field.
Two companies were selected to build prototypes for a
fly-off competition. Northrop was one company selected
and Fairchild Republic was the other. The Northrop entry
was designated A-9 while the Fairchild aircraft was
designated A-10.The first flight of the A-9A was on May 30, 1972, and the
fly-off competition ran between Oct. 10 and Dec. 9, 1972.
The Air Force selected the A-10 as the winner of the A-X
fly-off on Jan. 18, 1973. The two prototype A-9As were
transferred to NASA for flight testing before being retired.
Both prototypes are preserved in Museums.

F-20A - Originally designated F-5G, indicating it was a single
engined development of the F-5, but with 80% more engine
power, modern avionics and weapons and an enlarged wing,
the F-20 was designed, built and tested by the Northrop
Corporation in the early 1980's. Three prototypes were built,
two of which crashed during sales demonstrations and the
survivor now resides at the Los Angeles County Museum of
Science. The F-20 was the largest commercial military project ever
attempted. Designed for the export market, Northrop invested
$1.2 billion in the F-20 before the company cancelled it after
six years of sales attempts without success. It was a capable
aircraft, being one of the first to fully exploit the digital
electronics revolution but found no customer, because the
USAF preferred to stick with the F-16. It was also offered
to the USN in the "aggressor" role, but was again rejected
in favour of the F-16. Without a home market there was little
hope for export orders.
CD No 1 - YF-17 and YF-23
This CD contains the flight manuals for the YF-17 and
the YF-23. The YF-17 has been scanned from the original
flight manual and retains any colour pages, and the YF-23
has been scanned from a good quality photocopy of the
original flight manual (probably all that was ever produced).
