F6U PIRATE

XF5U - This was one of the most distinctive aircraft ever
produced. Designed to a concept developed by engineer
Charles Zimmerman, it followed a proof-of-concept aircraft
flight tested between 1942 and 1944.
A single example was produced but never flown. The main
problem related to its complicated gearbox. The aircraft
underwent ground runs but the gearbox vibration problem
was never solved and with jet aircraft rapidly entering
service, the project was cancelled and the sole example
scrapped.
F6U Pirate - The first jet fighter produced by Chance Vought
first flew in 1946 but unfortunately proved to have unimpressive
performance. 30 examples were produced for evauation by
the US Navy but the aircraft did not prove suitable for service
and all were scrapped in 1950.
This CD contains the Flight Manual for the F6U Pirate and several
documents for the F5U including the preliminary Flight Manual
(though unfortunately only a poor quality photocopy).
