Originally known as the multi-role combat aircraft (MRCA)
the type first flew in 1974.

The aircraft has three main roles, being strike, air defence
and electronic/combat reconnaissance. When production
ended in 1998, 992 examples had been built for the three
partner nations and the one export customer, Saudi Arabia.
