NORTHROP T-38 TALON
![]()
The Northrop T-38 was the first supersonic training aircraft and
was developed from the Northrop fighter project which was
eventually produced as the F-5 Freedom Fighter.
The USAF had no need for a lightweight fighter but was interested
in a trainer to replace the T-33. The prototype first flew in 1959
and entered operational service in 1961.
A total of 1,187 were built, most serving with the USAF but a
number also served with the US Navy, NASA, and several other
air arms. A few have found their way onto the civil market,
including one used by Boeing as a chase aircraft for prototype
testing.
