This CD covers three types of torpedo bombers produced by the
British Fairey Aviation company.
The Fairey Swordfish first flew in 1934 and entered service in
1936, by which time it was effectively obsolete. However over
2300 were built and they achieved a gallant wartime service
record with many spectacular successes.
The Albacore was designed as a replacement for the Swordfish
and first flew in 1938. However as it was still a biplane it offered
little performance gains over the Swordfish and was less
popular with crews due to its heavy controls. Approx 800 were
built between 1939 and 1943 but by then it was being replaced
in active units with the Barracuda.
The Barracuda was designed to replace the Albacore and first
flew in 1940. The initial Mk 1 version was underpowered and a
more powerful Merlin powerplant was fitted for the definitive
Mk II variant. Over 2600 examples were produced and the type
soldiered on in Royal Navy service until replaced by the Grumman
Avenger in the early 1950's.
The CD includes the WW2 flight manuals (titled Pilot's Notes) for
the Fairey Albacore, Barracuda and Swordfish, plus a modern flight
manual used by the RN Historic Flight for their Swordfish flown on
the historic aircraft and airshow circuit, plus the comprehensive
RAF Descriptive Handbook for the Swordfish. It has been scanned
from the original flight manuals and retains any colour pages.
