NORTH-AMERICAN
/ RYAN NAVION
![]()
The Navion was designed in 1946 by North American Aviation
who could see the end of large scale military aircraft production
and needed something to service the anticipated post-war civil
boom.
However North American lost money on all 1100 odd examples
it built in 1946 and 1947, and sold the complete program to Ryan
Aeronautical Company. Ryan built a further 1200 odd before
ending production in 1951.
246 Navions out of the total produced by both companies were
supplied to the USAF as the L-17 for liaison and training purposes.
A single example of a true military trainer, the model 72, was
produced in 1953 to compete unsuccessfully against the Beech
T-34 for USAF and US Navy contracts.
Ryan then sold the program to another company in 1957 who
produced a new and improved version. The program passed
through a number of corporate hands while being produced
in small numbers until 1976, when production finally ceased.
This CD contains the flight manuals and the maintenance manual
for military versions of the Navion, plus two flight manuals and
a maintenance manual for selected civil models. The CD has
been scanned from the original flight manuals and retains any
colour pages.
