AVRO MANCHESTER
& LANCASTER
![]()
The Avro Manchester was a twin engined bomber built to
a RAF specification for a new generation of twin-engined
medium bombers. Unfortunately the Rolls-Royce Vulture
engine used had been rushed into production and proved
extremely unreliable. About 200 examples of the Manchester
were built and all were withdrawn by 1942.
Avro had a new version of the aircraft on the drawing boards
using four examples of the now proven Rolls-Royce Merlin
engine and this aircraft first flew in 1941 as the Lancaster.
(Surviving Manchesters were re-built as Lancasters.)
The Lancaster proved very successful and was the mainstay
of RAF Bomber Command, with over 7,700 being built, including
400 odd in Canada.
The CD includes the flight manuals (titled Pilot's Notes) for
the Avro Manchester and Lancaster, has been scanned from
the original flight manuals and retains any colour pages.
