ILYUSHIN IL-2,
IL-14 and IL-28This CD contains three flight manuals in Russian from
the famous Ilyushin Russian Design Bureau.
IL-2
![]()
The IL-2 was first flown in 1941 and was initially a single
seat aircraft. It was one of the first aircraft to incorporate
large amounts of armour plating around vital components,
much actually part of the structure. Initial losses in air combat
let to the inclusion of a rear gunner. Unfortunately the same
amount of armour plating was not also included and the air
gunners combat life was 1/7 that of the pilot and the aircraft.
The IL-2 was the symbol of Soviet air power during WW2 and
more than 36,000 examples were produced, probably the
largest production run of any WW2 warplane.
IL-14
![]()
Like similar post-war Western countries, Russia was interested
in developing a replacement for the DC-3 (produced in Russia
as the Li-2). This resulted in the IL-12, a twin-engined tricycle
undercarriaged transport aircraft. The IL-14 was developed from
the IL-12 with an improved wing design and more powerful
engines.
The aircraft first appeared in 1953 and approx 1200 were produced
including some manufactured under licence in (then) East Germany
and (then) Czechoslovakia.
IL-28
![]()
The IL-28 was a successful Soviet marriage of British jet engine
technology and German aerodynamics and first flew in 1948.
Effectively the Russian equivalent of the Canberra, the aircraft
was equally versatile with many different variants for specialist
roles. Around 3,000 were produced, of which half went to export
customers.
The CD has been scanned from the original manuals.
