CHANCE VOUGHT F4U
The F4U is one of the most distinctive WW2 fighters, it's unusual
gull-wing configuration resulting from the need to make the
undercarriage a practical length while retaining clearance for the
large diameter propeller required by the R2800 Double-Wasp engine.
Design started in 1938 around the principle of evolving the smallest
airframe possible while carrying the most powerful engine then
available, the R2800. The prototype first flew in 1940 but lengthy
development for a wartime project meant the production version
did not enter service until 1943.
It subsequently proved itself the most outstanding carrier-based
fighter of WW2, and remained in production until 1952, by which
time over 12,500 had been produced by three manufacturers.
