The F-102 was the world's first supersonic all-weather jet
interceptor and the USAF's first operational delta-wing aircraft.
The F-102 made its initial flight on Oct. 24, 1953 but the initial
design had numerous problems, the most serious of which was
the inability to exceed Mach One in level flight.
The aircraft was re-designed incorporating the new "area rule"
theory developed by Richard Whitcombe and in conjunction
with a more powerfull engine exceeded Mach 1.2 on its first
flight. The aircraft became operational in 1956 and 873 were
eventually produced.
The F-102 was always seen as an interim aircraft, while
development of the "ultimate interceptor" was undertaken.
Originally designated F-102B, the F-106 was designed around
the Hughes MA-1 fire control system and first flew in 1956.
Despite numerous development problems and large scale
modification programs the aircraft enjoyed a long service
history, finally being retired in 1988, long after it's anticipated
service life. Although a much more sophisticated and capable
aircraft than the F-102, development problems led to cutbacks
on numbers and only 340 were built.
This CD contains the USAF flight manuals for both the F-102 Delta
