NORTH-AMERICAN.
F-100 SUPER SABRE
![]()
The F-100 was initially developed by North American as a
private venture development of the F-86, intended to be
capable of supersonic performance in level flight.
Awarded a USAF contract, the first prototype flew in 1953
and exceeded Mach One on its first flight. The first production
version, the F-100A, became operational in 1954 and was the
first production aircraft capable of supersonic performance
on level flight.
The next production version was the F-100C which introduced
in-flight refuelling and a more powerful engine. The most
extensively built version was the following F-100D, and the
final version was the twin-seat F-100F. Over 2,000 of all
models were built and the type saw extensive service with
several foreign air arms.
