De HAVILLAND DH104
DOVE & DH114 HERON

Flight Manual for the De Havilland Dove  Flight Manual for the De Havilland Heron

The De Havilland Dove was designed to a specification
produced by the Brabrazon committee for a short-haul
feeder airliner, and first flew in September 1945.

The aircraft was the natural successor to the earlier DH89
Dragon Rapide aircraft and proved one of Britains most
successful post-war civil airliners. 528 examples were
eventually built, comprising 388 civil aircraft and 140
military variants.

A development of the Dove with a lengthened fuselage
and two more engines was called the Heron. The aircraft
was designed for rugged simplicity and had a fixed
undercarriage and reliable unsupercharged engines.

It first flew in May 1950 and a total of 150 were built,
exported to 30 countries. The Mk 2 version introduced
retractable undercarriage but the performance remained
unspectacular and a number of aircraft were later modified
by third party companies with more powerful engines.
A more radical transformation with twin turbine powerplants
was carried out on a small number of aircraft by one
Canadian company.
