DC-10 (KC-10)
The DC-10 was the successor to the DC-8
as McDonnell-Douglas's
entry into the long-range civil airliner market and was the first
commercial airliner to be produced by the company following the
merger with McDonnell Aircraft in 1967.
The aircraft was designed
to an American Airlines specification
for a widebody airliner smaller than the 747 and able to handle
airports with smaller runways. It first flew in 1970 and entered
service in 1971, one year earlier than its similar looking rival the
Lockheed L-1011.
The aircraft suffered
a number of high-profile fatal accidents in
initial service but has eventually won a reputation as a safe and
reliable aircraft. This high desptach reliability has lead to its
popularity for cargo conversions.
The 386th and last example
was delivered in 1989. Starting in
1981 the USAF took delivery of 60 examples as the KC-10
Extender aerial refuelling aircraft. This aircraft had at the time
the longest range of any production aircraft.
