PIPER CUB
The ubiquitous Piper Cub name covers
a number of aircraft
models, beginning with the J-2 Cub of 1936. This was followed
by the J-3 Cub in 1938 which became the definitive Piper Cub.
Nearly 20,000 J-3 model
Cubs were produced between 1938 and
1949. Civil versions were designated J-3 if using 40hp or 50hp
engines, then J3C-65 if using 65hp engines, and subsequently
from 1947 the PA-11 Cub Special. Military versions were
designated L-4 for the USAAF (and L-14 for a special ambulance
version) and NE-1 for the US Navy.
In 1949 the PA-18 Super
Cub was introduced, initially using the
90 hp Continental C90 but later versions were fitted with various
engine types up to 150hp. The military version was designated
L-21.
