LOCKHEED 649/749
CONSTELLATION
![]()
The Lockheed Constellation was initially designed as a four engined
airliner, but at the time of its first flight in 1943 wartime requirements
meant all examples were diverted to the military as C-69 transport
aircraft. Only 21 examples of the C-69 were built before production
returned to civilian airliners, and all of the 21 were quickly sold onto
the civil market at wars end.
The civil version of the C-69 was known as the L.049. The first true
civil Constellation was the L.649, while the L.749 was a longer range
variant with additional fuel tanks in the outer wings.
The civil market was sluggish for Lockheed and the air force gave
them a huge lift in 1948 with an order for 9 C-121A's and one longer
range C-121B. Visually they were similar to the old C-69 but were
given a new designation. Most of these aircraft were used as VIP
aircraft, one named "Columbine" serving as the personal transport
of General Eisenhower.
This CD contains two flight manuals for the early short-fuselage
Constellations. The CD has been scanned from the original manuals
and retains any colour illustrations.
