WACKETT & BOOMERANG
This CD covers three
types of aircraft produced by the
Australian Commonwealth company 0f Australia. The
company was formed in 1936 as a result of a government
scheme to make the country independent of foreign
suppliers.
Following a visit to
the USA a licence was concluded
to manufacture the North American NA-16, to be called
the Wirraway. The first example first flew in 1939 and
a further 754 examples were eventually produced.
The Wackett was the
first aircraft designed completely
by the Commonwealth company, taking its name from
the designer Lawrence Wackett. Just over 200 of the
basic trainer were produced between 1940 and 1942.
The Boomerang fighter
aircraft was designed using as
many components as were already available in
Australia, to meet an urgent requirement for a modern
combat aircraft. It used the basic wing, undercarriage
and tail of the Wirraway, mated to a new fuselage and
the Twin Wasp engine in use on the Beaufort. It was
very manoeuvrable and well liked by pilots, and
approx 250 were built.
The CD includes the WW2
flight manuals (titled Pilot's
Notes or Operating Instructions) for the Commonwealth
Wirraway, Wackett and Boomerang. It has been scanned
from the original flight
manuals and retains any colour
pages.
