De HAVILLAND COMET
![]()
The De Havilland Comet is famous as the first jet airliner, and first
flew in 1949, building on Britain's lead in jet engine technology.
Unfortunately the aircraft suffered a well known series of in-flight
break-ups eventually traced after one of the most exhaustive
engineering investigations ever to metal fatigue emanating from
the edges of square windows.
The entire fleet was grounded during the investigation and subsequent
modifications and this enabled US manufacturers to catch up on the
British lead. This tragedy meant fewer than 90 Comets ever reached
commercial service compared to hundreds of the US rivals.
The beautiful Comet shape lives on in the British Nimrod maritime
reconnaissance aircraft, examples of which are being remanufactured
for projected service more than 75 years after the Comet first flew.
We offer two CD's for the beautiful aircraft, covering both early and
late models.
