LOCKHEED C-140
JETSTAR
![]()
The Lockheed L-1329 JetStar (C-140 in USAF service) is a four
engined business jet produced from the early 1960s through
the 1970s. It was the first dedicated business jet to enter service
and is instantly recognisable by its four engines, mounted on
the rear of the fuselage in a similar layout to the Vickers VC-10
and the Ilyushin Il-62 airliners. The aircraft first flew in 1957 as a twin with British Orpheus
engines, but the aircraft needed american engines to compete
in a USAF contest and there were no suitable US engines
available. It was re-engined with four JT12 engines.
In the end the USAF only purchased sixteen examples, which
were used as VIP transports including the vice-presidential
aircraft, and as airways inspection aircraft.
The aircraft received a new lease on life when it was re-engined
with Garret TF731 turbofans, and the last 40 production aircraft
were built in this configuration. Many other examples were
converted.
A total of 204 examples had been built when production ended
in 1978.
This CD contains flight manuals for military and civil versions
of the Lockheed C-140 Jetstar. The flight manuals have been
scanned from the original flight manuals and retain any colour
pages.
