The C-74 was designed during WW2 as a large long-range
transport aircraft, and first flew in 1945. However it suffered
contract cancellations typical after VJ day and less than 20 were
completed.
In 1947 the USAF decided it needed a new strategic transport
and Douglas developed the C-124 as an enlargement of the earlier
C-74 aircraft. The prototype YC-124 was modified from the 5th
C-74 with a new fuselage and strengthened landing-gear.
The production C-124A entered service in 1950 and approx 450
were built in two principal versions. The later C-124C incorporated
more powerful engines, weather radar and combustion heaters
in wingtip fairings.
They remained in service until 1970. With a cavernous cargo hold
traversed by two 16000 lb capacity cranes, it was also able to
carry 200 fully equipped troops when two decks were installed. This CD contains the flight manuals for the C-74 and the initial
production version of the Douglas C-124. The CD has been
scanned from the original flight manuals and retains any colour
pages.
