GRUMMAN AF2 GUARDIAN
![]()
The Grumman AF Guardian was the first purpose-built
anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft system to enter
service in the US Navy. It consisted of two airframes,
one the AF-2W carrying detection gear (the "Hunter"),
the other the AF-2S carrying weapons ("the Killer").
Initially developed as a torpedo bomber with a jet engine
in the tail, the jet engine was removed without ever
being used in flight and the aircraft was re-developed
in the ASW role.
The AF-2S entered service in 1950, followed by the AF-2W
in 1952. A total of 389 examples of both variants were
built. However they only remained in active service until
1955 when they were replaced by the S-2 Tracker, an
airframe which combined both roles.
The CD includes flight manuals covering both variants of the
Grumman AF-2 Guardian. The CD has been scanned from the
original manuals and retains any colour pages.
